Welcome! My name is Lonnie Stapp; I am the founder and Clinical Director of Avalon Counseling, one of the top-rated out-patient mental health clinics in Coeur d’Alene and Northern Idaho. I am a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC-6878), with a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology. In addition, I am a Vietnam-era veteran, with two grown children. Having been born and raised along the Gulf coast of Texas I am invigorated every day with the beauty of the Inland Northwest and the heartiness of the people who inhabit it.
Avalon Counseling’s Vision
At our clinic, we celebrate the uniqueness of each person with exclusive treatment tailored to the individual. We are committed to providing confidential, ethical, safe, self-affirming and non-judgmental counseling for individuals, family, and couples. We carefully listen to your goals and values and then join with you in finding your unique purpose-filled life path. Whatever the issue you or a loved one is experiencing we stand ready to help.
My passion is to see individuals and couples establish and restore healthy relationships and to help them live rich, full, meaningful lives. I’m holistic in my approach, looking at all aspects of the person’s mind, body, and spirit that make us unique and human. I provide individual counseling, couples counseling, and group counseling for a wide variety of concerns.
My Path to Psychology
My colleagues, patients, family members, and friends often ask me why I chose psychology as a career. Shoot, most days I ask myself the same thing. I chose to pursue psychology after a traumatic event involving my wife. This event lead me to seek out personal and family counseling for which I am grateful. I am a personal witness to the benefits of counseling and continue to schedule visits with my therapist.
Every therapist brings their unique perspective to therapy. All therapists academic curriculums are similar and include the history of psychology, the contribution of the founders, the theories, and ethics of counseling. Most counselors then go on to get specialized training during their internships, residencies, and institutional certification. Most have adopted an integrated scholar-practitioner approach to counseling. That is all jargon for saying most counseling professionals use the most up-to-date evidence-based treatments that take into account the patient’s physical wellness, their psychological history, environmental influences, and their culture.
All of the aforementioned apply to my training and ethical commitment. What I try to bring into the therapy session is my training and experience and just as importantly a mature, non-judgemental, respectful, professional confidence and curiosity. Someone once said of the human species; we are at the same time all alike and unique. One final point I would share is that the best counselors are the ones who consider, as I do, the privilege of counseling “a calling” rather than a job, profession, or a career.
